Small Potatoes, Chapter 8

First, to begin with, I was very interested in Levinson’s discussion about this topic. First and foremost, my experience with Myspace was interesting because I felt like i was addicted to this site for a bit of time. But now that I look back at my experience I see Myspace as a very immature site. People were able to create their own themes, and add a personal song to their page. Also, being able to create your “top 8” friends was a major factor of Myspace as well. Myspace is defiantly for the younger audience. As a grow older, I am now aware of cyberbullying stories. Although i don’t watch the news on a every day basis, I know that there is a new story about bullying and a child who has killed their self after being manipulated or threatened online.

Foursquare & Hardware: Chapter 7

Foursquare is not as known compared to Facebook or Twitter. Foursquare only exists on smart phones, and not on laptops. Foursquare is known to be a site where you check in telling the world where you are located. As humans we have adapted to technology progressing. In our generation with all the technology progressing, so is the hardware and services. For instance, back in the day it was seen that iPhones only last for 30 minutes. Now, the iPhone now lasts 4 hours and 30 minutes.  It’s crazy to thin about all the adcancements and what is yet to come.

Chapter 10 ( Politics and New New Media)

In Chapter 10, Levinson discusses about President Obama’s campaign. He includes and describes the methods that are used to attract the audience. As a reader, I witness the ways the new new media has played in our society in the rise of multiple political organizations. Levinson then discussed on the way that new new media gives out information to society. In our generation, it is so easy for people to find issues or information. But currently, there’s an issue where people would rather  include false information. People will believe anything they see and that is a major effect on how new new media influence the election and the people in it.

The Dark Side of New Media: Chapter 9

In this chapter, Levinson goes on to discuss the negative sides of new new media. Levinson discusses and includes many topics about the fears of our society. These topics include bullying, Flaming and Trolling, Online Gossipping and Cyberbullying, Tweeting and Terrorism, Spam, Craiglist Bank Heist, Overreaction, and Cyberstalking. levinson first starts his discussion about guns and the good and the bad. He discusses how they are very dangerous but then discusses that guns can be represented as good for protection. I really likes this analogy because it made me think about people and their negative actions. Also, because of new media, bullying has become an effect. I believe that this is true because no sites like Facebook have made it easier for people to become victims because a lot of people are very cruel over the internet.

WORCESTER (CBS/AP) — The uncle of a Boston Marathon bombing suspect killed in a gun battle with police arrived at a funeral home Sunday to arrange for his burial.

Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., and three other men met with Worcester funeral home director Peter Stefan. The men who accompanied Tsarni plan to wash and perform Muslim burial rites on the body of 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Stefan said.

Outside the funeral home, Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral ParlorsTsarni told reporters he’s not proud of Tamerlan Tsarnaev but there is no one else to take care of the burial. “I’m left alone to deal with this matter,” he said.

The soft-spoken Tsarni told reporters his religion tells him “this person needs to be buried.”

Tsarnaev, who had appeared in surveillance photos wearing a black cap and was identified as Suspect No. 1, died…

*A Story of A Suicide..

The Story of A Suicide

By Ian Parker

The story was so interesting. It’s crazy to think how much new media plays a crucial role in allowing events to happen, especially suicide. Suicide is one of the most concerns that new media plays on people. A lot of social media sites give the ability to threaten or abuse someone online. There have been thousands of incidents where kids get gossiped about on a social network site to the point where it leads to the person’s death. Tyler Clementi’s death was because of a similar situation. “Ellen  DeGeneres declared that Clementi has been ‘outed as being gay on the Internet and he killed himself. Something must be done’”. This problem of bullying online isn’t getting any better, just worse.

*Levinson: Twitter Response

First and foremost, I love Twitter and all the possible feautures that you can do on it. Twitter is what is slowly taking over Facebook. Even though Facebook has a billion users, I may think a good amount of their people attract older adults nowadays. A good amount of the participants on Twitter seem to be business owners, and middle aged children as well. You don’t hear much of a parent having Twitter. As of May 2009, there are 32 million of users on Twitter. Imagine 4 years later, how much users on in it now? Levinson states that Twitter is growing faster than any other social medium. Twitter’s privacy is much better thann Facebook. Levinson points out that you can under cover yourself and put your name as anything the user likes. The good thing about Twitter is it’s ability to do whatever you please. You can post whatever is on your mind and people won’t care, until it gets to a point where its annoying. Twitter has been very helpful to business people and the news. The ability to “retweet” makes it so easy for things to get around.
